Skill Development Program (ILO)


Ministry of Textile Industry (Mintex) Government of Pakistan has launched a Skill Development Project with collaboration of International Labor Organization (ILO) and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Mintex has selected four textile training institutes working under administrative control of Mintex namely

  1. Pakistan Readymade Garment Training Institute (PRGTTI)LHR,

  2. Pakistan Knitwear Training Institute (PKTI)LHR,

  3. Pakistan Fashion and Apparel Design Institute (FADIN) Karachi

  4. SMA Rizvi Textile Institute (SMARTI) Karachi

as partners for implementation of this project. The training program’s main objective is provision of skilled workforce to Textile Industry to make it more competitive and export oriented and to uplift the economic status and living standard of trainees especially women through their employment based skill development.

Mintex will cover the costs incurred in the areas of trainee stipend, trainer’ salary, raw material cost, social mobilization (through News paper advertisement web Portal, banners, posters etc), evaluation cost and certificate printing & distribution. The admissions in the skill development program have started from 15th September 2012 and classes would start from 1st October 2012. Ministry of textile Industry is offering multiple textile training courses focusing on garment sector i.e. Fashion & apparel design and Pattern making and cutting for lingerie making, Line supervisory skills, Quality control, Fancy stitching and Knitting machine operators training.

This program will render dual benefits for Pakistan's economy; firstly provision of skilled workforce to textile garment industry, and secondly, employment opportunities for workers especially women trained. Approximately 600 trainees would be trained in different batches spread over about one and half year’s time. On the completion of training course, job placement of the trainees would be ensured with the help of textile institutes and respective textile associations.

Export development project implementation unit of Ministry of textile industry is working as coordination and implementation agency for this skill development project between International labor Organization, Canadian International Development Agency (ILO, CIDA) and Textile Training Institutes. All the stake holders of the skill development project are hopeful for positive results. This program is the right step forward because skilled workforce is the requirement of value added textile industry of Pakistan.
